Apistogramma agassizii are unusual among cichlids in that they make great community fish, provided their tankmates are of similar size. This species does best when kept in pairs or in small groups. The water should be slightly acidic, and the aquarium should be at least 30 gallons. A. agassizii is omnivorous and will accept most preprepared foods, however, it should be provided a varied diet including both vegetable and protein. Oleg Kiselev has reported that soft water, low pH, and high temprature can induce spawning of A. agassizii. He suggests lowering the pH and hardness slowly, over the course of a day, by replacing about 1/3 of the water with reverse osmosis (RO) water, and increasing the temperature to around 84°F. The pre-spawning diet is important, and should consist almost entirely of live worms or larvae. |
