B. splendens, like most callichthyids, stays small and so is a popular fish for small aquariums. They do best in small groups and should not be kept singly. This fish is omnivorous and will eat anything that falls to the bottom of the tank. Standard prepared foods will be accepted, but it will do best with a varied diet including both vegetable and meaty foods. Spirulina flakes or pellets and blood worms are always appreciated. B. splendens is widely available int he hobby. Breeding these fish has ocurred in aquariums, usually as 30-40 eggs layed on the glass or on the underside of a leaf. The young look very different from the adults, and should be fed finely ground flake food and/or newly hatched brine shrimp. |
