| Family Callichthyidae |
| The family Callichthyidae contains some of the most beloved aquarium specimens, the Corydoras (or Cory) catfish. These relatively ancient armored catfish occur naturally in South America and Panama. There bodies are covered with two rows of overlapping bony plates on each side and the swim bladder is contained in bony case. The Corys' small mouths are located ventrally (on the bottom), and are flanked by one or two pairs of well-developed barbels. The dorsal, pectoral fins, and adipose fins sport strong spines. Some species can trap air in their vascular hindgut, enabling them to travel short distances on land! Click on the links below to read more about some commonly available Callichthyid species. |
