Danio aequipinnatus inhabits mountain streams at elevations up to 300m. They are normally found in shaded, clear waters over a pebble or gravel bottom. In the wild, this species feeds on insects that find their way into the water, as well as worms and crustaceans. In the aquarium D. aequipinnatus will feed on most standard preprepared foods. However, like most fish, it will do best with a varied diet. Giant Danios are schooling fish, often found in large groups in the wild. In captivity they need the ocmpany of their own kind and should only be kept is groups of a half dozen individuals or more. They are generally peaceful and suitable for the community aquarium, provided its tankmates are similar in size. Spawning of this species does occur in captivity. There are reports that direct sunlight in the breeding tank may help to stimulate spawning. The pair will produce up to 300 eggs, which will hatch in about 36 hours. The fry can be successfully reared on freshly hatched brine shrimp. |
