| D. compressiceps gets is fearsome nickname from its curious habit of biting the eyes out of its prey. It also has the odd distinction of being the only piscine predator to swallow its prey tail first. In Lake Malawi, this species inhabits the heavily vegetated shallows. It feeds on small schooling fish. In the aquarium the size and temperament of the Eye-biter should be the first consideration. They can get nearly a foot long, and should not be housed in any tank less than 75 gallons. Being ambush predators, they are most comfortable when provided with plenty of rocks, caves, and aquatic plants. If housed in brightly lit tanks without adequate shelter they will quickly become stressed and prone to disease. They can be kept with other aggressive African cichlids of similar size, but remember that any fish small enough to fit in the mouth of D. compressiceps is a potential meal. Feed this species a diet high in protein, including fresh or frozen fish, shellfish, insect larvae, and/or worms. |
