| Farlowella curtirostris, and other species in this genus, are delicate fish that are best left for experienced aquarists. It can be difficult to provide a good, balanced diet for these fish since it is almost exclusively vegetarian. Farlowella species do not fare well on meaty foods and should be provided with spirulina-based foods or sinking algae pellets. Stable water quality is critical for success with these fish. Large water changes will likely lead to stress and possibly death. It is best to make smaller, more frequent water changes to limit their impact. This is not an easy group of fish to keep, as evidenced by numerous stories of unexplained deaths. Since the Farlowella sp. are very timid species, they are best housed with other peaceful, low-key fish like Corydoras and small Characins or Rasboras. Cichlids and other large, territorial, bullying fish are definitely not the ideal tankmates. The Farlowella species most often offered for sale are F. acus, F. vittata and F. gracillis. |
