This species is commonly found in the middle and upper Amazon and Orinoco River systems. Since these animals can get relatively large, they should be housed in a large aquarium, at least three feet long to start. G. gibbiceps are primarily herbivorous, but often eat anything they find on the aquarium substrate. Nocturnal by nature, they spend most of the daylight hours hidden under a rock or in a cave, coming out at night to feed continously on algae and other bits of food. spinach, blanched lettuce, cucumber, corgette (zucchini) and also non veg food such as tablets and prawns can be offered to supplement their algae diet. It is virtually impossible to breed these fish in the home aquarium as they lay their eggs in excavated holes dug into the banks of rivers. However, some commercial operations are reporting success breeding G. gibbiceps for the aquarium hobby. |
