Haplochromis latifasciatusHaplochromis latifasciatus is a relatively small fish, and so makes a suitable addition to a mixed cichlid community tank. They are omnivorous, but their diet should be low in protein and consist mostly of algae or other plant material. They are an easy species to breed when they are kept as a harem (one male with several females). When females are ready to breed, they will swim in small circles around a male. She will lay from 15-30 eggs and then gather them into her mouth. Once all pf the eggs are in her mouth, the male "shivers" in front of her displaying his egg spots. As she attempts to pick up the egg spots, he fertilizes the eggs in her mouth. Females hold their eggs in their mouths until they hatch (about three days), and then hold the fry for an additional 18 days. The fry grow quickly and should be fed newly hatched brine shrimp.
