Silvar dollars are peaceful community fish and should be kept is shoals of several fish. They are most comfortable with diffuse lighting and a dark substrate. M. hypsauchen are mainly herbivorous, but will occasionally eat bloodworms or other meaty foods. Since they are herbivorous, they will graze on any plants you have in the tank. To somewhat protect plants from grazing, supply the M. hypsauchen with plenty of vegetable-based food like spirulina flakes, blanched and cooled lettuce, even shelled peas. There are actually several characin species sold as "Silver Dollars," including Metynnis argenteus and Mylossoma aureum. |
